Many stakeholders have been called upon to submit documentation for Levuka town to be recognized as a world heritage site. National Heritage director – Peni Cavulagi says they enlisted the help of researchers and UNESCO to get their submissions done."The actual preparation itself took time and had to according to the guideline set by UNESCO. But Levuka was good because there were lots of researches being done which assisted us."

Levuka Town
Levuka is a town on the eastern coast of the Fijian island of Ovalau, in Lomaiviti Province, in the Eastern Division of Fiji. It was formerly the Capital of Fiji. At the census in 2007, the last to date, Levuka town had a population of 1,131 (plus 3,266 living in the peri-urban area as defined by the Bureau of Statistics), about half of Ovalau's 8,360 inhabitants. It is the economic hub and the largest of 24 settlements on the island. Levuka and the island of Ovalau have been seeking recognition from UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for decades.Cavulagi says Levuka was compared to other heritage sites throughout the Pacific. "There was also a comparative analysis for Levuka and the South Pacific. Levuka was quite unique because of its history. We were able to put together documents from researches and all other documentation from the other relevant stakeholders before putting in our final submissions."
The National Heritage Department is now looking forward to getting the results of their submissions to the World Heritage Committee in July next year.Levuka is the old capital and has many buildings dating back over 100 years.
